General remarks The empty space behind the last pilgrim, while the rest of the panel is very crowded, is striking and seems to indicate there was originally a thirteenth pilgrim, which is also suggested by the documentary evidence (Van Tongerloo, p. 233, who suggests that the missing person may have been Gerbrand Verduyst).
