Additional information
Remarks Identification uncertain. The catalogue of the Catharijneconvent identifies the sitter as Hendrik van der Veere, bailiff of Domburg. However, the copy of the painting (see other known portraits) is identified as depicting Jacob Adriaansz. Van Domburg. It is unlikely that two different persons are depicted, since there are only minor differences between the paintings, and the texts are the same. Jacob Adriaansz. van Domburg seems to make more sense as being the sitter, however, because of the coats of arms, which are those of his parents. The coats of arms do not relate in any way to Hendrik de Veere, except that he lived in Domburg. If this is Jacob Adriaansz. van Domburg, however, the text on the painting must have been added later, since this mentions the painting to be made in 1551 and his age of death of 82, while he only died in 1553. Another possibility is that this is a copy made of a portrait from 1551 made after his death. This might suggest that the (original) painting was made on the occasion of his Jerusalem pilgrimage, and that 1551 is therefore the year of his return from pilgrimage.
