Visual elements
Short description Resurrection of Christ in the background, encompassed by a Renaissance arch as part of an architectural frame. On both sides of the arch are niches with small statues (male nudes) carrying the coats of arms. In front of the structure are kneeling family members of the Van Boshuizen-Coppier family, five men on the viewer's left, six women on the right. Of these persons, three children (one boy and two girls) kneel in front of the other, are considerably smaller and are differently dressed, which probably indicates that they are dead.
Coat of arms In niche on the left: semicircular shield - vair
In niche on the right: lozenge shield - in red a gold crowned silver demi-lion
Depicted pilgrim (on the left side, fourth from the left)

Additional information
General remarks The date is very uncertain: there is a date mentioned on the painting (1596), which is very hard to read, however, so it was suggested that it might read 1505, since the parents on the painting died in 1505 and 1518. However, the Renaissance architectural elements suggest a later date of manufacture. This indicates that the portraits could have been copied from earlier examples. Buchelius, Inscriptiones, f. 33r mentions a stained-glass window in St Peter's Church in Leiden with the resurrection of Christ with prayer portraits. The accompanying coats of arms identify the portraits as being from the Van Boshuizen-Coppier family. Moreover, Buchelius's drawing of the portraits shows remarkable similarities with this panel, except for the number of portrayed children. It could therefore well be that this panel is a copy of the mentioned window, maybe made by the family in order to preserve their ancestors’ portraits, which were to be destroyed, possibly during the Reformation, which would also suggest that the date of 1596 might be correct.
