Additional information |
This seems to be an adaptation of Mary with Child and prayer portrait with abbot Scaglia, by Antony van Dyck, 1634 (London, National Gallery), which is almost identical, except that Scaglia has been replaced with the Jerusalem pilgrim. This explains the knee and cloth in the back of this painting, which thus belong to the Virgin. It is strange that only her knee is depicted, so probably the painting was originally larger.
Abbot Scaglia lived in Brussels at the time of painting of his portrait, and in Antwerp from 1637 onwards. Since this painting is probably copied around 1650, it is likely that the Jerusalem pilgrim came from Antwerp, or at least from the Southern Netherlands. |
