West end of the north aisle of the nave (noorderkerk)

Original location:

The register of graves records this slab as situated in row 3 (grave 3) of the south choir (R3 G3)

Rectangular 'headstone' (hooftstuck) featuring an inscription above and in the centre an oval medallion with a shield suspended from a bare branch

Material:

Blue limestone

50 x 75 cm

Condition:

The slab is complete, but badly worn in places, especially the inscription which is now largely illegible

Inscription:

'Marya Aedry[en Goesenz.] dochter'

Translation:

Marya Aedry[en Goesenz.]dochter

Language:

Dutch

Heraldry:

Shield suspended from a bare branch, two wavy bars, lozenges 2 and 1

General remarks:

The slab shows the same heraldry as that of Adriaen Goesenz., which suggests that Marya Adryaensdochter was his daughter. During the sixteenth century the same arms also belonged to the Van Cats family in the Linschoten area where Adriaen Goesenz. owned land, as did others of his family; some descendants of a certain Rijck Goesenz. (probably a brother of Adriaen) later carried the name Van Cats, which is suggestive.
