Date:

1527 and 1537

MeMO memorial object ID:

313

Commemorated party:

The relationship between Willem Ghijsbart Janz. and Jan Ghijsbartz. van der Laen is not known, but they may have been father and son

Current location:

Presbytery

Original location:

The register of graves records this slab as situated in row 8 (grave 11) of the north choir (R8 G11).

Short description:

Large rectangular stone slab with an marginal inscription in Gothic textualis on all four sides, medallions with the evangelist symbols in the four corners, a priest's chalice flanked by two shields at the top; below, in a circular medallion surrounded by an inscription, a shield accollé surmounted by a helmet and mantling.

Condition:

The slab is badly worn in places; parts of the inscription are now illegible and the heraldry unclear; the right side has also been cut down and the lower left corner is broken.

Material:

Blue limestone

Dimensions:

172 x 66 cm

Inscription 1:

'Hier leit begraven Willem Ghijsbart Janz. van der Laen sterf anno XVcXXVII den XXVII october'

Translation 1:

Here lies buried Willem Ghijsbart Janz. van der Laen died in the year 1527 on the 27th of October.

Inscription 2:

'Hier leit begraven heer Jan Ghijsbartz. van der Laen priester [...] pastor et [...] sterf XVcXXXVII den XV september'

Translation 2:

Here lies buried Sir Jan Ghijsbartz. van der Laen, priest [...] parson [...] died 1537 on the 15th of September.

Language:

Dutch

Heraldry:

Flanking the chalice two unidentified shields featuring, according to the description by P.C. Bloys van Treslong Prins, 1) three surplices 2 and 1, and 2) chaussé. The shield in the medallion features 1) two grated bars, and 2) three spools (or lozenges pommely?) 2 and 1. It is not yet known whether this represents the Van der Laen arms per pale, or a shield accollé with the two grated bars representing Van der Laen and the spools or lozenges pommely being the arms of either Willem Ghijsbart Janz.'s wife or his mother. None of the shields described have been identified, although chaussé was used by the Montfoort family of Collaert. The three spools might possibly represent large 'lozenges pommely', which is the shield of the Lords of Vliet as well as of the Van Meerlandt family at Oudewater, for example.

Alterations:

Underneath the medallion the letters M.N.B. have been added, referring to Mathijs Noteboom who bought this grave around 1705.

General remarks:

Prior to the Oudewater Massacre of 1575, the Van der Laen family belonged to the regent class of the town. Records still show some members of the family alive between 1575 and 1600, after which the name dies out.
