The floor slabs of Oudewater

2. Floor slab of Celi van Zijl and Alijt van Swieten

Date:

1517 and 1500

MeMO memorial object ID:

410

Commemorated party:

Celi [Cecilia] van Zijl was a daughter of Dirck van Zijl and Elisabeth van Hoven. She married Jacob Hugenz. van Swieten, who may have been born in Leiden; the Van Swietens (or Van Zwietens) were a prominent family there. The name 'Jacop Blochhoven' in the inscription may indicate that he was Lord of Blokhoven. Alijt was their daughter. Celi and Jacob were the parents of the two priests Jan Jacobz. (d. 1524) and Jan van Swieten (d. 1531), who were commemorated with their father and other members of their extended family on the double floor slab now situated in the central nave.

Current location:

South aisle of the nave (zuiderkerk)

Original location:

The register of graves records this slab as situated in row 11 (grave 5) of the north choir (R11 G5)

Short description:

Rectangular 'headstone' (hooftstuck) with five lines of inscription in Gothic textualis around a shield accollé in the centre.

Condition:

The slab has suffered damage to its edges and a break in the bottom left corner, but is otherwise complete; the text is still clearly legible.

Blue limestone

Dimensions:

45 x 75 cm

Inscription:

'Hier leit begraven Celi van Zijl Jacop Blochovenz. wijf sterf anno XVc ende XVII [d]en XVIII junio [ende] Alijt Jacop Huchgenz. dochter sterf anno XVc'

Here lies buried Celi van Zijl, wife of Jacop Blochovenz., died in the year 1517 on the 18th of June, [and] Alijt, daughter of Jacop Huchgenz., died in the year 1500.

Language:

Dutch

Heraldry:

Heraldic shield per pale: I. three violins, 2 and 1 (Van Swieten) and II. a chevron with three crosses saltire (Van Zijl)

Alterations:

Ownership of the grave must later have reverted to the church, as indicated by the letter K scratched across the escutcheon and the number 5 (i.e. grave no. 5).

General remarks:

The slab was recorded by the Utrecht antiquary Aernout van Buchel (Buchelius, 1565-1641), who was unable to read the name 'Celi'.
